Why SENIORS NEED to Use Tech

Written by Scott Johnston - 04/01/25

Society is growing increasingly reliant on technology to do everyday tasks. While not being able to use tech can be problematic for anyone, seniors often feel left behind in today’s world. About 61 percent of seniors own a smartphone and half of seniors want to learn about tech, according to Kyruushealth.com. While many seniors own smartphones, computers, and tablets, their usage may be limited due to a lack of knowledge, as well as fears around security and breaking something. One-on-one lessons can help them feel more empowered, confident, and connected to friends and loved ones who are far away. “80 percent of seniors use tech to stay in touch with loved ones according to Kyruushealth.com.”

The world is increasingly connected and the majority of seniors who have access to the internet use it every day. Seniors are also spending more money on tech. According to Kyrusshealth.com, they are spending “$1,144 a year on tech which is up from $394 in 2019.” Older adults are also increasingly on social media. The number of seniors on social media has quadrupled in recent years, according to Kyrusshealth.com.

Seniors who learn to use technology are also safer because they are less susceptible to scams.  They are one of the most vulnerable groups when it comes to scams. While not all online, “older adults lost $12.5 billion due to fraud and scams in 2024, an increase of 25 percent, according to AARP.com.” By learning to use technology they are less likely to fall for online scams which are sadly becoming more common. Scammers often target seniors because they assume that they don’t know how to use technology. As the old saying goes, knowledge is power!
